About the Kenneth Woods Portfolio Management Program

The Kenneth Woods Portfolio Management Program (KWPMP) was formed for the primary purpose of training a select group of undergraduate students in the John Molson School of Business at Concordia University in investment management. The KWPMP was established by a generous gift from Mr. Kenneth Woods (MBA 1975) in honour of the late Professor Calvin C. Potter.

The KWPMP student portfolio managers will participate in the selection and on-going management of the portfolio.  In executing these duties, these managers will work closely with academic faculty in the Department of Finance, a Client Committee as well as a group of Mentors of leading professionals chosen from the investment management community.

The KWPMP student portfolio managers are responsible for all aspects of the money management process, including the development of investment policies, the analysis of capital market conditions, asset allocation and security selection, and the creation of regular performance attribution and financial statements to be presented to the Client Committee.

Six to ten students will be chosen each year to join the KWPMP for a two-year period.  First year KWPMP students will be Research Associates assisting the second year KWPMP students who are the Portfolio Managers.  KWPMP students are expected to dedicate a significant amount of time to the daily management of the portfolio.

KWPMP students normally have 2 semester-long Work Internships in the Investment Industry – the first one in Toronto and the second one in Montreal.  Special  scholarships and/or bursaries are currently available exclusively to KWPMP students.

Open to
This presentation is open to all members of Concordia University and local universities.

Professor Zollo will discuss the ongoing shift of the sustainability debate from its historical focus on definitional (“what”) and motivational (“why”) questions to the understanding of change and learning process questions (“how”). This shift is connected to the efforts some firms are making to evolve towards “sustainable enterprise” models.  The presentation will suggest that shifting the focus of analysis to the level of the initiatives undertaken to change the various elements of the enterprise model could offer the best way to frame the conceptual and empirical challenge before us.

Maurizio Zollo

Maurizio Zollo Maurizio Zollo is the Dean’s Chaired Professor in Strategy and Sustainability at the Management and Technology department of Bocconi University and director of the Centre for Research in Organization and Management (CROMA).  He is also has a part-time chair appointment at the Vienna School of Economics and Business (WU), in the Strategy and Innovation department, and is Visiting Professor at the Sloan School of Management at M.I.T. He is currently the president of the European Academy of Management (EURAM), and served as the editor of the European Management Review (EURAM’s official journal).

His research work aims to understand how business organizations evolve over time and how managers can guide these evolutionary processes through the combined use of strategic growth initiatives and profound organizational change, innovation and learning processes. It thus focuses on the management of complex strategic initiatives, from M&A, to partnerships, to sustainability-oriented innovation and transformation processes. His current research activity includes directing two major collaborative programs: the Global Organizational Learning and Development Network (GOLDEN) for Sustainability program and the neuro-scientific foundations of strategic decisions.

Professor Zollo served on the Executive Committee of the Academy of Business in Society, which he helped establish in 2001. For the Strategic Management Society, he chaired the Innovation and Knowledge Interest Group and was a founder and chair of the Stakeholder Strategy Interest Group. A past member of Executive Committee of the Strategy Division of the Academy of Management, he also co-founded the Business & Society Division of EURAM. In addition to his editor role for the European Management Review, he also served as associate editor or editorial board member of six other leading academic journals in strategy and organization studies.

He joined Bocconi University in September 2007 after having served for 10 years on the faculty of INSEAD in the Department of Strategy. He holds a PhD degree in management from the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School and a Laurea degree in monetary economics from Bocconi University.  Before starting his academic career, he was a strategy consultant at McKinsey & Co. and investment banker at Merrill Lynch. He has also delivered executive development programs for firms like IBM, Johnson & Johnson, Procter & Gamble, Daimler Chrysler, Foster’s, KPMG, AON, Société Générale, DNV, Dexia Bank and Telecom Italia.

Colloquium on Corporate Ownership and Control in Quebec and Canada in Collaboration with the Institute for Governance (IGOPP)

Concordia University’s John Molson Executive Centre and the Institute for Governance (IGOPP) welcome Nicolas Marceau, Minister of Finance and the Economy.

This event offers a great opportunity to address an issue that has been widely discussed in the media. The acquisition offers made for RONA and PotashCorp made headlines across the country.  Globalization is driving Asian capital to resource-rich North America. The government already plays a protectionist role in certain industries, but what should the  boundaries of that role be?

Discussion Topics

  • Corporate ownership and control in Quebec and in Canada: a major challenge?
  • Should we encourage our entrepreneurs to keep corporate ownership by giving them multiple-voting shares?
  • Should we strengthen federal and provincial laws, to give more power to boards in an effort to keep unsolicited offers at bay?
  • How can we ensure the successful performance of organizations such as cooperatives and private firms, which are not subject to a public takeover (OPA)?

Speakers

  • Yvan Allaire
Executive Chairman, Institute for Governance (IGOPP)
  • Yvon Bolduc
President and Chief Executive Officer, Fonds de solidarité FTQ
  • Eric R. La Flèche
President and Chief Executive Officer, METRO INC.
  • Andrew Molson
Chairman of the Board, Molson Coors Brewing Company
  • Louis Morisset
Superintendent, Securities Market, Autorité des marchés financiers
  • Marie-José Nadeau
Executive Vice President, Corporate Affairs and Secretary General, Hydro-Québec
  • Paul Raymond
    Senior Associate, Norton Rose
  • Denis Richard
    President, La Coop fédérée
  • Michael Sabia
President and Chief Executive Officer, Caisse de dépot et placement du Québec
