Congratulations to the John Molson School of Business (JMSB) team for their excellent performance at the University of Otago competition in Queenstown, New Zealand.
The team, composed of Daniele Brissette-Lalonde, Anna Vinitskaia, Valentine Vaillant and Bill Garnett, placed second overall at the Student Development Society International Case Competition.
The first of three cases, worth 40 per cent, was Jucy Rentals, a vehicle rental company in New Zealand. With five hours to prepare, their 10-minute presentation and 10-minute question period earned JMSB a fourth place finish in their division. Placing fourth only fueled the team's determination, and the subsequent phases of the competition had very different results.
In case two, the Crazy Case, each advisor was given two hours to prepare with a team of four students not from their university. This case was purely for fun; no points were awarded, but the cameraderie was pervasive.
With renewed vigour, the JMSB attacked the third case, worth 60 per cent, on Earthcare Environmental, a local waste company. JMSB placed first in their division, solidifying their place in the finals, along with Auckland, University of South Wales, and Maastricht.
The four finalists presented their afternoon cases, and were judged by business professionals and the owner of the Earthcare Environmental himself. The end result was a solid second place finish of which both the team and all of JMSB are very proud.
The final rankings:
1 - University of Auckland
2 - John Molson School of Business, Concordia University
3 - University of New South Wales
4 - Maastricht University
Many thanks go out to Rabia Khan, Tim Field, and Cedrin Law for taking the team to a level that impressed people from all over the world.
The John Molson Competition Committee also thanks Mark Haber, head coach and advisor to the Competition Program, for his dedication to the new team at this new competition.
