What is Human Resource Management?

Human Resource Management is the core function of all organizations. It ensures that companies have the necessary talent required to operate effectively. It manages the recruitment and selection of new employees as well as the training and development of new and current employees. Additionally, it establishes and administers compensation plans and employee benefit programs.

Why study Human Resource Management at Concordia?

Pursuing a BComm degree with a Major in Human Resource Management (HRM) will equip you with the fundamentals needed to be effective change agents, either as an entrepreneur, manager or consultant. In addition to fundamental HRM skills (e.g., job analysis, interviewing, negotiations, strategic thinking, etc.) we equip you with an awareness of business realities as they relate to human resource issues and real-world problem solving skills.

Human Resource Management Co-Op Program

Did You Know that the human resource management major has a Co-op Program? Students in the JMSB HRM Co-op Program complete three 12 to 17 week paid work terms as part of their Bachelor of Commerce studies.
The benefits? Here are just a few:
  • You’ll have almost one full year of work-related experience on your resume when you graduate
  • After working in three different jobs, you’ll have a better idea of the type of work you’d like to do and the size of organization that’s right for you
  • You’ll get to apply the material you’ve learned in class to real-world situations
  • Throughout your studies in the Co-op Program, you’ll be building an ever-expanding network of colleagues and potential employers
  • You may even be hired by a co-op employer on a full-time basis after graduation!

Getting Involved with Organizations at Concordia

John Molson Human Resources Association (JMHRA)

The JMHRA's goal is to showcase the importance of Human Resources, as being an essential activity in any organization. Through our exciting events, enriching activities, and on-line information, we will showcase JMSB's talented HR students.
John Molson Competition Program (JMCC) Each year, 45 men and women are chosen to represent JMSB in regional, national and international case competitions. The competitions are in various disciplines such as economics, finance, management, marketing, accounting, MIS, human resources, tax, strategy, entrepreneurship, ethics and labour arbitration.
  • HR Symposium
    Congratulations to the JMSB team for their performance at the 2009 HR Symposium hosted by the University du Québec in Trois-Rivières. The JMSB teams gave a strong performance in their respective disciplines, and won second prize in the Negotiation category and third prize in the Kinball sporting event.
  • Excalibur
    Concordia University's John Molson School of Business took home the title at the 24th edition of the Excalibur Tournament in Human Resources.  Twenty-three teams from across Canada took part in the event organized by the Ordre des conseillers en ressources humaines agréés and supported by the Canadian Council of Human Resources Associations. The University of Waterloo and the University of Saskatchewan won second and third place respectively.
