\n\nProfessor Zollo will discuss the ongoing shift of the sustainabilit
y debate from its historical focus on definitional (“what”) and motiva
tional (“why”) questions to the understanding of change and learning p
rocess questions (“how”). This shift is connected to the efforts some
firms are making to evolve towards “sustainable enterprise” models.
The presentation will suggest that shifting the focus of analysis to the l
evel of the initiatives undertaken to change the various elements of the e
nterprise model could offer the best way to frame the conceptual and empir
ical challenge before us.

\n\n | \nMaurizio Zollo is the Dean
s Chaired Professor in Strategy and Sustainability at the Management and
Technology department of Bocconi University and director of the Centre fo
r Research in Organization and Management (CROMA). He is also has a part
-time chair appointment at the Vienna School of Economics and Business (WU
)\, in the Strategy and Innovation department\, and is Visiting Professor
at the Sloan School of Management at M.I.T. He is currently the president
of the European Academy of Management (EURAM)\, and served as the editor o
f the European Management Review (EURAM’s official journal).
His research work aims to understand how business organizations evolve ove
r time and how managers can guide these evolutionary processes through the
combined use of strategic growth initiatives and profound organizational
change\, innovation and learning processes. It thus focuses on the managem
ent of complex strategic initiatives\, from M&A\, to partnerships\, to sus
tainability-oriented innovation and transformation processes. His current
research activity includes directing two major collaborative programs: the
Global Organizational Learning and Development Network (GOLDEN) for Susta
inability program and the neuro-scientific foundations of strategic decisi
ons.
Professor Zollo served on the Executive Committee of the A
cademy of Business in Society\, which he helped establish in 2001. For the
Strategic Management Society\, he chaired the Innovation and Knowledge In
terest Group and was a founder and chair of the Stakeholder Strategy Inter
est Group. A past member of Executive Committee of the Strategy Division o
f the Academy of Management\, he also co-founded the Business & Society Di
vision of EURAM. In addition to his editor role for the European Managemen
t Review\, he also served as associate editor or editorial board member of
six other leading academic journals in strategy and organization studies.
He joined Bocconi University in September 2007 after having se
rved for 10 years on the faculty of INSEAD in the Department of Strategy.
He holds a PhD degree in management from the University of Pennsylvania Wh
arton School and a Laurea degree in monetary economics from Bocconi Univer
sity. Before starting his academic career\, he was a strategy consultant
at McKinsey & Co. and investment banker at Merrill Lynch. He has also del
ivered executive development programs for firms like IBM\, Johnson & Johns
on\, Procter & Gamble\, Daimler Chrysler\, Foster’s\, KPMG\, AON\, Soci
té Générale\, DNV\, Dexia Bank and Telecom Italia.
