Magda Donia

Magda Donia is a Ph.D. candidate in Organizational Behavior working under the supervision of Dr. Gary Johns. Her major research interests focus on the motives underlying the performance of organizational citizenship behaviors (OCBs) and role definitions (the breadth of responsibility individuals consider to comprise their jobs). In addition to ongoing work with her supervisor, she has had the opportunity to work with various faculty members in the management department, including Marylène Gagné, Linda Dyer, Stéphane Brutus and Kai Lamertz. She has experience teaching Introductory OB and Cross-Cultural OB at the undergraduate level.

Dissertation

“Do motives matter?  Uncovering the value of motives in organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) research”.  Abstract: There are two main views on the role of motives on OCB research: that motives are not necessary to furthering OCB research and that uncovering motives are important both for OCB theory and practice.  While the dominance of the first view is evident in the scant attention to motives accompanying proliferating OCB research, in the same papers where motives are not investigated, terms connoting motivational intent are commonly present (i.e. “good soldier”).   This dissertation contributes to this discussion by proposing that motives matter, and suggests a moderating role of motives on the relationship between OCBs and correlates such as perceived affective commitment and performance. (Data collected in May 2009, proposal defended in May 2008; expected to defend in spring 2011)
