CIBC Family Business Forum

The CIBC Family Business Forum was initiated by the CIBC Endowed Distinguished Professorship of Family Business.

Objectives

  • To provide a round-table for family business scholars to meet and discuss research in their discipline and an opportunity for faculty and graduate students from the four major universities to meet top scholars in the field
  • To provide a vehicle allowing Canadian family firms and their professional associations to participate in the Forum debate and thus bridge the gap between theory and practice
  • To carve a niche for JMSB in the field of family business and within the Montreal business community

Due to limited resources (a Distinguished Professorship Endowment is half the amount of an endowed or research chair) and the extensive preparations required in the three to six-month period preceding the event, the Concordia CIBC Forum is held only every second year.

In the past, the Forum has dealt with a number of family business issues, including succession, promoting entrepreneurship and renewal in family firms, competitive advantages of family firms, and governance of family firms. Some of the many prominent scholars and professionals who have participated in the Forum include:

Professor J. Astrachan, Wachovia Chair of Family Business and Editor of The Family Business Review, the only academic outlet in the field. He is also Distinguished Chair of Family Business at Loyola University, Chicago
