Overview of the Academic Program Appraisals

The purpose of university academic appraisals is to "improve the quality and relevance of academic programs offered by the universities at all levels and in all academic sectors, with a view to fostering their further development."

Guidelines for academic appraisals have been mutually established by members of the Conférence des recteurs et des principaux des universities du Québec (CREPUQ) as a means of program self-renewal, to maintain high quality programs, and to build public trust in Quebec universities. Based on this general, province-wide policy, Concordia has developed appraisal guidelines specific to the needs of its university community.

Each program appraisal process is conducted in relation to the existing mission statements and academic plans of the program, faculty/school and university. The criteria for program appraisal are based on the following five principles adopted by the Concordia University Senate:

  • Academic quality of teaching and research
  • Current and potential student demand for the programs
  • Goals and objectives that are consistent with the University’s mission and identity
  • Cost-efficiency and effectiveness
  • Opportunities for partnerships with others to enhance or maintain quality

The entire academic appraisal process runs on a seven-year cycle. Each academic appraisal goes through four main stages:

  • Self-appraisal at the program level
  • Evaluation by external consultants
  • Evaluation and synthesis of recommendations on a University-wide level
  • Development of an Implementation Plan by Dean(s) and the Vice-Provost Academic

Recommendations from the Implementation Plan provide the basis for Academic Planning, which is subsequently approved by the JMSB and the Senate.

The program appraisal manual consists of the manual itself and its appendices. Please refer to the Provost website for the complete Manual. Please note that consultation and discussion of the following three documents are essential to any appraisal in JMSB.
