The FirstClass Client is a free download. Downloading and installing it is accomplished in three easy steps.

3. What is my user ID and password?

If you already have a NetName at Concordia, then this is the same as your FirstClass User ID.
To find out what your User ID/NetName is, follow these instructions:

  1. Go to https://fcms.concordia.ca/netname/net01.asp
  2. Choose: "I don't have my NetName yet; I want to activate it. I am a student."
  3. Click Submit
  4. Fill out the online form to activate your NetName
  5. Now that you have your NetName, you can use it as your FirstClass User ID

Your initial FirstClass password is your Concordia Student Card number. Please change it the first time you log on.

4. What if I have problems?

  1. Try to find your answer in the online help section by choosing Help->Contents from the menu (within the FirstClass Client).
  2. Otherwise, your answer could be in one of the video-tutorials by clicking here

5. How do I know if the server is down?

6. What if I don't have a computer at home?

  1. The FirstClass Client is installed in all the labs in the GM building.
  2. You can also use the Internet Lab in the Hall and CC buildings. To get an account:
  • Go to Computing Services on the 9th floor (H-980)
  • Ask for access to the Internet Lab

7. What if I am behind a firewall?

There are three ways to work around this issue:
If you or your company has a firewall, please contact your system administrator or the person administrating the firewall. Inform them that FirstClass responds on Port 510.

OR

Change the default port that the FirstClass Client uses to connect to our FirstClass Server, by :

  1. At the Logon Window, click the Setup button.

  2. In the new window that opens, click on the Configure button.

  3. In the next window, click in the Port number field and type in 443.

OR

If your company is running a proxy server, you can configure your Client to use it.

  1. At the Login Window, click the Setup button.

  2. In the new window that opens, click on the Configure button.

  3. In the next window, fill in the IP address of your network’s proxy server.
    (If you don't know the IP address, ask your network
    administrator)

8. Where do I find my class area on the server?

Classes Your class material is located in the Classes folder on your FirstClass Desktop.

9. I've found my class area on the server. Why is it empty?

It's empty because the professor has not posted any notes there. The server shows the same contents of the conferences to everyone. If someone in the class claims to have found the notes on the FirstClass Server and you do not see them there, then the professor has removed them or your classmate was looking in a different place (or on a different server).

10. Why do asterisks appear when I save my password?

Starting in FirstClass Client version 6.011, FirstClass decided to incorporate a new way of saving the password field that would make it more difficult for intruders to guess your password.

11. What if I am receiving an error message that says, "Sorry no FirstClass Server with that name was found on the network. Check your connection setup. [1044]?"

  1. This happens if you missed that last step on the downloads page. If you click here , it may correct your problem. Your login window should now have the correct name in the Server : field.

  2. If this did not help, then you need to click the Setup button on the Login Window and enter jmsb.concordia.ca in the server field. When you are done your Service Setup window should look like the image below.

12. What if I am receiving an error message that says, "The User ID or Password is not valid. Check that you have entered your User ID and Password correctly. [1003]?"

  1. The first time you see this, just retype your information on the Login window and try again.
  2. If that does not work, see What is my user ID and password?
  3. If you are sure that you are using the correct User ID and Password and you are still having trouble, then seeWhat if I have problems?

13. How to forward your FC account emails to another email system?

  1. In FirstClass, open Preferences, then click "Messaging" tab.
  2. There is a section labeled "Automatically forward", make both "Local mail" and "Interet mail" be "Yes".
  3. In the "Forward to" section, put your new email address.
  4. In the "Method", choose "Redirect".
  5. Finally click "Apply" and "OK".
