Internal Funding is available to get you started or bridge a research project.

Faculty Research Committee review of applications for internal research grants funded by:

  • Office of the Vice-President, Research & Graduate Studies
  • CASA General Research Funds
  • IBUS

The Faculty Research Committee adheres to the policies of the granting agencies and therefore cannot reimburse costs or financial commitments that pre-date the award. The objectives and priorities outlined below are based on the Research Task Force recommendations and the document entitled, “A Strategy for Enhancing Faculty Members’ Research Activities”.

Objectives of the JMSB Faculty Research Funding Program

  • Contribute to the training and/or thesis research of our graduate students
  • Enhance our success in obtaining research funding from external granting agencies
  • Increase publications, especially in high quality, refereed academic journals
  • Reward outstanding researchers

Related Research Priorities and Policies

  • Give priority to student research funding to expedite successful completion of thesis requirements
  • Support new researchers in attaining quality publications and external research funding

Timing

The Faculty Research Committee will have at least two (2) major calls for proposals (Fall/Winter) per year. Some awards have no deadline and are therefore subject to availability of funds.

CASA General Research Funds

Applications should take into account the established evaluation criteria specific to the award. Students and faculty are encouraged to discuss proposals with their department representative on the Faculty Research Committee.

The Process

  1. First, the Faculty Research Committee department representative from whose area the proposal emanates provides an evaluation of the proposal to the Committee.
  2. All evaluators will gain a good understanding of the proposal to permit an objective evaluation.
  3. Next, proposals are discussed by all Committee members.
  4. An evaluation model incorporating set criteria will then be used to establish project rating.
  5. Committee members do not vote on proposals emanating from their own departments.
  6. The Committee Chair votes only in case of a tie.
  7. Summary feedback is provided to all applicants.
Final acceptance may be conditional upon the submission of a revised proposal (addressed to the Chair of the Faculty Research Committee).

Results

A memo will be sent to the grant supervisor approximately three weeks following the deadline for applications and a copy will be sent to the student through the program office. Shortly thereafter, a Notification of Award will be issued to the grant supervisor bearing the appropriate research fund number. All expenditures must bear this number, as well as the appropriate code for the type of expense.
