Nov 3: The article "The multi-tasking paradox: perceptions, problems and strategies" by Dr. Steven Appelbaum (Management) in collaboration with Adam Marchionni and Arturo Fernandez was published in Management Decision.
Oct 31: In a unanimous decision by the the Board, Dr. Steven Appelbaum (Management) was named to the Board of Directors of Mountain Lake PBS - Public Television Network.
Oct 20: The John Molson School of Business of Concordia University invites applications for the first appointment of the Jarislowsky Chair in Corporate Governance as well as for the newly established David O’Brien Distinguished Professorship in Sustainable Enterprise
Sep 17: Dean Sanjay Sharma participates in the 2008 Mont Tremblant Forum. More than 140 corporate, foundation, institutional, non-profit and government leaders from across Canada attended the fifth annual Tremblant Forum on corporate responsibility and sustainability held on September 16 and 17 in Mont Tremblant....listen to Dean Sharma's interview on Alternaive Channel.
Jun 15: Ulrike de Brentani, Ph.D., Professor of Marketing, Director of Ph.D. and M.Sc. in Administration Programs, together with her research colleagues, accepted the “Thomas P. Hustad Best Paper of the Year 2007” in Journal of Product Innovation Management Award at the September 2008 meeting of the Product Innovation and Management Association (PDMA) in Orlando, Florida.
Sep 20: The article--Kleinschmidt , Elko J., Ulrike de Brentani and Sören Salomo, "Performance of Global New Product Development Programs: A Resource Based View." Journal of Product Innovation Management. Lead Article in the special issue on: "Effective Global Product Innovation and Launch" 24,5 (September 2007): 419-441--is based on a major research project on Global New Product Development originally funded by SSHRC. The study had the involvement of over 300 North American and 150 European firms that are actively involved in developing new products and services for global markets.
Jun 16: Nicole Berube, phd candidate in management, and colleagues won the RHR Kendall Award for Best Student Paper in I/O psychology, which consists of 1000$ to the student, for the following paper: Bérubé, N., Gagné, M., Donia, M., Koestner, K., & Houlfort (2008). Validation of the Satisfaction with Work Scale in six organizational settings. Poster presented a the Annual Meeting of the Canadian Psychological Association, Halifax, NS.
May 28: The ASAC program 2008 featured a total of six best papers and honorable mentions from Concordia and JMSB were the winners of the Research Excellence Award . Management Professor and Concordia University Research Chair in Management, Dr. Johns, accepted the award on behalf of the school. ASAC 2008 Conference was held in Halifax, NS, May 24 -27.
May 22: Dave McKenzie and Christopher Ross (Marketing) have developed and co-authored a business case (Tyndale Treasures Community Store) that has been accepted for presentation and publication as part of the Case Track ASAC 2008 Conference in Halifax, NS, May 24 -27.
May 21: Satyaveer Chauhan has been awarded a Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) Discovery Grant worth $85,000 over three years. Dr. Chauhan's project, Advance planning tools for responsive supply chains, was up against tough competition. The team in Concordia's Office of Research helped him to refine his proposal, for which he is highly appreciative.
Apr 11: Martin Martens (Management) welcomed Marlene Jennings, Member of Parliament for Notre-Dame-de-Grâce-Lachine, to give a presentation to his Business and Environment class. The talk was about the federal government's role in addressing climate change and the Liberal's plans for encouraging sustainable development.
Apr 4: Suresh Goyal's paper appears in the list of the "Top 100 Cited Decision Sciences Articles" published in Decision Sciences during the 36 year period (1970-2006). Dr Goyal's article, "A Joint Economic-Lot-Size Model for Purchaser and Vendor ", 19:1, 236-241, Mar 1988, was ranked 17th.
March: Ulrich Wassmer (Management) recently welcomed two guest speakers to his MBA elective couse on Management Consulting. On March 3, Mr. Alim Ladha, an engagement manager with McKinsey & Company's Montreal office, gave a presentation to the class on what it is like to work as a management consultant with a leading consulting firm. On March 31, Mr. Pierre Sabbagh, Bombardier Aerospace's Director of Strategy and Business Development, talked to the class about the role and challenges of being an internal consultant in a multi-business company.
Feb 18-19: Gad Saad was invited as a distinguised guest speaker to the University of Arizona's where he gave three talks. Dr Saad was the speaker for the 2nd Dennis and Chris Miller Speakers' Series in Retailing and Consumer Sciences at the Norton School. This was a university-wide talk titled "Evolutionary Theory & Consumption." The second talk was titled "To Strategize or Not to Strategize: That is the Question - Musings of an Interdisciplinarian and Iconoclastic Evolutionary Consumer Scholar." The third talk was on Dr Saad's my bibliometrics research titled "H-Index: What Is It and Does It Matter?" and was co-presented with Bruce J. Ellis.
Feb 11: Martin Martens recently welcomed visiting speaker, Cheryl Gladu, from Ecocite to give a presentation to his Management class on sustainable buildings. The course, Business and Environment, is JMSB's first undergraduate course focusing on sustainable development.
Feb 7: Recent JMSB PhD graduate, Eric Patton (now at St. Joseph's University in Pennsylvania), and Gary Johns, Concordia University Research Chair in Management, have won an award for the best article published in the journal Human Relations in 2007. Entitled 'Women’s Absenteeism in the Popular Press: Evidence for a Gender-specific Absence Culture ', the article is based on a content analysis of over 100 years of New York Times articles featuring absence from work. Human Relations is published by Sage and sponsored by The Tavistock Institute of London.
Jan 26: Gad Saad (Marketing) gave a talk describing the key contents of his book titled The Evolutionary Bases of Consumption at the Concordia University Back-to-School Faculty Showcase (alumni event).
Jan 22: Dr Charles Cho (Accountancy) is part of an organizing committee for the 2008 North American Congress on Social and Environmental Accounting Research (1st CSEAR Summer School in North America). The 2nd call for papers and registration form are now available from the website. The deadline to submit extended abstracts is February 28, 2008 and deadline to submit papers (full or in progress) and register, is April 15, 2008.
Jan 17: Associate Dean Lorne Switzer was recognized as the Calgary CFA (certified financial analysts) Society's "forecaster of the year." When the forecasts he made last year were read out at this year's CFA event, according to Wes Peters, the President of the CFA Society "they were greeted with thunderous applause," and will be engraved on a trophy for him. His predictions were on the behaviour in 2007 of the price of oil, the level of the Toronto Stock Exchange Index, the price of natural gas, and the level of the Standard & Poors 500 index.
Jan 8: Dr Martin Marten's paper, "Shackleton’s Endurance Expedition: An Interactive Leadership Case Study " was listed on the Social Science Research Network's top ten download list. As of Jan 7, 2008 this paper has been downloaded 151 times.
Nov: Steven H. Appelbaum and Brenda M. Fewster had their paper, Safety and Customer Service: Contemporary Practices in Diversity, Organizational Development and Training and Development in the Global Civil Aviation Industry , published in the Aviation Centre of Excellence's (ACEXC) website.
Nov: Steven H. Appelbaum, Giulio David Iaconi and Albert Matousek had their paper, Positive and negative deviant workplace behaviors: causes, impacts, and solutions, published by Corporate Governance , Vol. 7, No. 5, 2007.
Nov: Yongheng Yao, Steven H. Appelbaum, Rick Molz and Michel Magnan had their paper, CEO Compensation: A Process and Product of Negotiation, accepted for presentation by The Southern Management Association of The Academy of Management Annual Meeting in Nashville, TN, November 2007.
Oct 18: Isabelle Dostaler (Management) was invited to present an aerospace and aviation industry outlook at the 17e congrès des Aéroports francophones ALFA-ACI 2007 on October 18. The meeting was hosted by Aéroports de Montréal and held at the Marriot Château Champlain.
Oct: Dr. Ulrike de Brentani, Professor of Marketing, is keynote speaker at the 2007 ServiceForum in Finland (29-30 October, Tampere), where she will present her research on "Benchmarking Global New Service Development Performance: Impact of Strategy and the Behavioral Environment of the Firm." Dr de Brentani also speaks at the Service Marketing workshop taking place at the Helsinki School of Economics on November 1, 2007.
Sep 29: Dr. Lome Switzer (Finance) and Haibo Fan's paper, "The Transactions Costs of Risk Management vs.Speculation in an Electronic Trading Environment: Evidence from the Montreal Exchange" by has been selected as the 2007 winner of the Bank of Canada prize for the best paper in the field of empirical research on Canadian financial markets. This prize consists of a $1000 honourarium and an invitation to the Bank of Canada to present the paper (all expenses covered for one author).
Sep 7: The Office of the Provost has posted biographical profiles of professors who were granted tenure or who were promoted to full professor or senior librarian this year to highlight the contributions of our professors.
Sep: Dr. Ulrike de Brentani (Marketing) has just published an article in the Journal of Product Innovation Management entitled "Performance of Global New Product Development Programs: A Resource Based View".
Furthermore, Dr. Ulrike de Brentani has been appointed Track Chair of the Innovation and New Product Development track for the 2008 European Marketing Academy Conference (EMAC 2008), which takes place in Brighton, UK in May 2008.
