Sebastian van Berkom, president and CEO of Van Berkom and Associates Inc.; and last year’s winners, Norman Hébert, Jr., president and CEO of Groupe Park Avenue Inc., and Leslie Machan, Jr., vice-president of Pension Planning Centre.

“Once again, it was a pleasure to see the JMSB, Fuller Landau and the family business community come together to celebrate the achievements of the winners,” said Michael Newton, managing partner at Fuller Landau. “Family businesses are the backbone of our economy. Congratulations to the winning enterprises – those that have clearly excelled at transitioning to the next generation while maintaining a strong and viable organization.”

Colors of Concordia celebrates ten years

Among the 25,000 cyclists participating in this year’s Tour de l’Ile will be 200 conspicuously dressed individuals whose biking efforts will benefit more than just their fitness levels. The group of bright green-shirted bikers will be representing Colors of Concordia, an organization dedicated to promoting projects that bring about greater cultural understanding.

Through its participation in Montreal’s Tour de l’Ile, the group, made up of students, faculty, staff and alumni, raises money for the Colors of Concordia Cultural Inititative Fund (CCCIF), which supports organizations whose objectives embrace diversity and promote cultural awareness. Participating cyclists seek pledges for completing the 50-kilometre Tour circuit, and all moneys raised contribute directly to the CCCIF.

“We need to encourage cultural awareness,” says Marvin Coleby, a political science student who assumed the presidency of Colors of Concordia this year. “Being sensitive to diverse cultural identities doesn’t just help us understand different countries, and customs. It actually means we can better understand people, the way they think, act and feel. We enrich ourselves in the process.”

The organization has been in operation for ten years. It was founded by Ramona Senecal, who works as receptionist for undergraduate student programs at the John Molson School of Business (JMSB). Senecal, who had participating in the Tour de l’Ile for years, felt that the event offered the Concordia community an opportunity to couple philanthropy with a celebration of its multicultural membership.

The group’s fundraising efforts led to the establishment of an endowment fund, from which a scholarship is awarded annually to the Concordia student that best demonstrates a commitment to volunteer work that promotes understanding between cultures.

In 2010, the Colors of Concordia Cultural Inititative Fund was created in order to disperse funds to qualifying organizations who apply for grants. Last year, the fund benefitted five organizations through the disbursement of $13,600.

Colby believes that Colors of Concordia has had an enormously positive effect on cultural communities within Concordia. “We need to celebrate these ten years of success!” he says. This year’s Tour de l’Ile is taking place on June 3 and Colors of Concordia is encouraging members of the Concordia community to participate in the event, make a donation or to sponsor a rider.

The deadline for registration is Tuesday, May 22, 2012.

Please email infococ@jmsb.concordia for more information or to obtain a pledge form.

Posted May 15, 2012

The event brings together 64 talented undergraduate students from 16 schools from around the world to compete in a week-long case competition.

The competition consisted of two cases (worth 20% each) that allowed for three hours of preparation each, and a more involved case (worth 60%), for which teams had 24 hours to prepare. Teams were divided into four divisions and competed against every team within their division.

After three rounds of presentations, the finalists were chosen based on the number of points they had accumulated, with the highest-scoring teams in each division presenting another three-hour case. The JMSB team was beaten in the final round, finishing in fourth place overall.

The final rankings were:

National University of Singapore

University of Hong Kong

University of Toronto, Rotman School of Business

The John Molson Competition Committee would like to thank coaches Peter Vogopoulos, Tim Field, Matthew Parker-Jones and Cleo Roch, as well as Mark Haber, head coach and Advisor to the Competition Program, for bringing the team to a level that impressed people from all over the world.

The team would also like to express its deepest gratitude to exclusive sponsor Pfizer Canada for their support and encouragement of the case competition program.

For

Four MBA students from the John Molson School of Business (JMSB) traveled to the University of Calgary’s Haskayne School of Business to participate in the third annual Haskayne 24-Hour Case Competition, which took place from March 8 to 11.

Coached by part-time instructor Dickson Jay and MBA alumnus Aaron Linden, the team (Cedrin Law, Maria Gabriela Gomez, Elena Raznovan and Srikanth Sekar) prepared for the strategy competition by running through a number of practice cases. As the name of the competition suggests, competing teams are only provided with the case upon arrival and are given 24 hours to prepare their presentations. Teams were encouraged to use outside resources, allowing them to strengthen their analyses, recommendations and implementation plans.

The opening ceremonies of the competition featured guest speakers Patrick Lor, President of Fotolia North America and Gary Kovacs, CEO of Mozilla Inc, both of whom are proud Haskayne alumni. Teams were drawn into their respective divisions, with JMSB having been placed in Division 1, and then returned to the Hyatt Regency hotel to rest up for the next day’s proceedings.

JMSB received their case at 10:00 a.m. on March 9. It concerned DIRTT, a provider of interior modular architectural solutions. The preparation period featured two very distinctive elements. First, each team was permitted to consult with a Certified General Accountant for twenty minutes. Second, teams had the opportunity to ask Miles Nixon, DIRTT’s CFO, questions during a question-and-answer period that took place during dinner. Nixon was later a judge in the final round of the competition.

At 10:30 a.m. the following morning, having virtually worked through the night, the JMSB presented their recommendations. The team faced a particularly difficult question and answer period, but performed well. Despite this, JMSB did not qualify for the final round. Ultimately, Haskayne went on to win the competition thanks to their impressive recommendations and plans.

The JMSB team was very proud to represent Concordia in Calgary and had a great experience at Haskayne. The team would like to thank their lead coaches, Dickson Jay and Aaron Linden for preparing them for the competition, as well as head coach Tim Field, for his guidance and wisdom.

Special thanks to the John Molson Graduate Student Association and the John Molson School of Business for funding the team’s participation in the competition and to VP Case Competitions, Matthew Fishman for handling the team’s logistics.

Posted March 29, 2012
