The Ordre des comptables généraux accrédités (CGA-Québec) has donated $250,000 to establish the CGA Research Centre at Concordia’s John Molson School of Business (JMSB). The centre is the first of its kind in Quebec and will be led by Department of Accountancy Associate Professor Emilio Boulianne who, along with an advisory board and scientific committee, will shape the think-tank’s strategic direction. JMSB was shortlisted against sister institutions province-wide before winning the competition.

The CGA Research Centre is earmarked to become a national reference point in research in accountancy and will focus on CGA competencies such as organizational effectiveness, ethics and trust, leadership, accounting policy, management accounting, environmental organization and information technologies. It will also produce educational materials, articles for scientific journals, and strengthen ties between JMSB and CGA-Québec.

Five-year mandate

For a five-year period, beginning in 2012, $50,000 will be available annually for research, student awards and conferences with keynote speakers in the field of accountancy. The CGA Research Centre will also benefit from visiting professors and accountancy professionals who will lead research projects and run courses. JMSB currently has seven professors who hold the Certified General Accountant designation.

“We are grateful to CGA-Québec for this gift and are proud to serve as international thought-leaders in this area of applied research,” says Marie Claire Morin, Vice-President, Advancement and Alumni Relations. “Accountancy students in Quebec and beyond Canada’s borders are the immediate beneficiaries of this tremendous initiative whose scope reflects Concordia’s global vision to deliver exceptional education to promising scholars.”

“Concordia is enriched by the creation of the CGA Research Centre,” says JMSB Interim Dean Alan Hochstein. “This timely initiative recognizes our Faculty and its leaders who are in lock-step with business professionals to develop, produce and deliver outstanding research that advances our students and society.”

The Green Team, with Adam Osseyrane, Antoine Rezko, Isabelle Gendron and Jason Lau, was edged out in the first round by the eventual second place finishers.

Adam Blanchard, John Molson MBA alumnus and co-coach of aVANT-garde, was impressed by how quickly both teams gelled leading up to the event. Both teams managed to prepared extensively despite the fact that the event was held a few weeks earlier than usual this year. Team members were often found by their peers in various locations of the MB Building discussing cases at all hours of the day.

Teams were sent their case a week ahead of the competition and had access to outside research in framing their recommended action plan. The case involved Clorox not reaching their centennial goals to date. These goals included financial growth and a stronger focus on CSR.

Congratulations to the other three finalist teams:

Schulich School of Business, York University

Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto

Ted Rogers School of Management, Ryerson University

The MBA Society would like to thank lead coaches (and JMSB MBA alumni) Adam Blanchard and Marc Le Guen (aVANT-garde) and Ivonne Medina and Shawna Rose (Green Team) for the mentoring of their teams and their dedication to the program.

Special thanks to head coach Tim Field for his guidance and to Miriam Roland, whose generous establishment of the Miriam Roland Fellowship in Business Ethics makes participation in such events possible.

Thank you also to Matthew Fishman (MBA Society VP Case Competitions) for his efforts in supporting the organization and logistics of JMSB’s participation in this competition.

Posted February 2, 2012.

The JMSB team made its mark on the competition with an impressive third-place place finish.

“The Ryerson case was about Sustainametrics, a tech start-up developing a Smartphone app to help companies implement their sustainability strategy among their employees,” said Berger. “Our job was to value the start-up and determine the best way to finance its growth - it had a projected shortfall in the next year if it did not receive a cash injection. The professor who wrote the case told us we had the most accurate valuation.”

The final rankings were:

JMSB teams qualified in six competition categories: five business disciplines and the category for debate. This in itself was an incredible accomplishment and represent JMSB’s best qualification round results ever.

The JMSB delegation managed to parlay its six entries into four podium finishes - the most of any university at the competition.

Congratulations to all the ICBC competitors and coaches for their outstanding work and commitment!

Below is a list of competitors and their results:

It is the oldest and largest competition of its kind in the world.

The Concordia Cup, awarded to the competition winners, was presented to the delegation from Université Laval at a closing banquet on January 10 along with a cheque for $10,000. The University of Otago from New Zealand finished second, while the University of Calgary’s Haskayne School of Business rounded out the top three.

This year’s competition had 36 participating teams, representing schools from 11 different countries. The JMSB team — Pierre Carpentier, Robert Fiori, Rabia Khan, Bryan McCrory and Damian Wolff — made it to the semi-finals, finishing in the top nine.

“I could not be prouder of my team's performance,” said coach Tim Field. “Over the week, Rabia struggled with a bad cold and Pierre had the stomach flu and had not eaten for three days. This did not show in their performance once. They remained focused, professional and provided stronger and stronger presentations as the week progressed. It was a real pleasure for me to work with such an intelligent, motivated and dynamic group. They represent the best of JMSB's potential graduates and will undoubtedly have successful business careers.”

For Khan the competiton was “by far, the best experience in the MBA program. The competition not only helped me learn to analyze a business problem in a structured fashion under a time constraint but also, and more importantly, allowed me to form lifelong friendships with my teammates, our coach and past JMSB teams who came to lend us their support. The competition also provided a venue to meet students from international programs, which is quite an opportunity!”

The most anticipated moment of the competition came when organizers announced the identity of the company that would be presenting the “live case,” which is when members of senior management of a major firm arrive to communicate a business problem to the teams. This year, the surprise company was Montreal-based IT firm, CGI Group. Teams had three hours to prepare their recommendations.

In an interview on CTV Montreal’s News at Noon, Concordia alumnus and Senior Vice-President, Global Communications and Investor Relations at CGI, Lorne Gorber, explained that the company is looking for opportunities for growth and that “the bright young minds at the case competition could bring some of these opportunites forward.”

He also explained that the event offered firms a great opportunity to recruit top talent. “MBA students bring certain strategic element to businesses like CGI who use technology to solve business problems.” Gorber added that often “these ideas can turn into tangible and strategic business opportunities.”

Posted Tuesday, January 17, 2012
