Are We Teaching What Students Should Be Learning?

An Examination of Marketing Academicians’ and Practitioners’ Views

This research started with a simple question: What should our marketing graduates know and be able to do? While several studies have examined what should be taught in specific courses, such as marketing research, none have examined the marketing discipline in general. Marketing academicians and practitioners rated the importance of learning outcomes, and several similarities and differences emerged. This presentation will discuss the most important concepts/skills each group deem important. While the goal of this research is to assist marketing academicians when developing and assessing their marketing curricula, the process followed holds implications for other disciplines as well.
