Top Achievements for JMSB Students
Goodman Institute students outperform the world once again! Students earn an impressive 84% CFA® Level I exam pass rate.
For the fifth consecutive year, students at the Goodman Institute of Investment Management (GIIM) at Concordia University have more than doubled the worldwide CFA Level I pass rate, achieving a success rate of 84% compared to the worldwide rate of 39% at the June 2011 exams. The GIIM is the world's only MBA program that fully integrates the Chartered Financial Analyst® (CFA) Body of Knowledge™ into its curriculum. Students have the opportunity to earn an MBA in Investment Management as well as the knowledge to fully prepare them to successfully pass all three levels of the CFA exams.
Offered through the John Molson School of Business, the Goodman Institute’s MBA in Investment Management Program provides the world’s only MBA program that fully integrates the requirements of the CFA Program. Concordia University was named the first university in Canada and one of the first in the world to become a Program Partner of CFA Institute in April 2006. This combined curriculum permits students to study towards two world-recognized designations simultaneously.

JMSB Student Sabrina Sargent wins Governor General's Academic Medal!
Finance student Sabrina Sargent has been awarded the Governor General’s Academic Silver Medal for outstanding scholastic achievement. Her graduating GPA of 4.28 is the highest one of all graduating Concordia University students for this academic year.
Achieving such a distinction is no easy feat. Maintaining a near perfect GPA throughout an entire degree takes nothing short of complete dedication. “It takes a great deal of hard work,” explains Sabrina. “Throughout my studies I have set challenging goals and strived to achieve them.”
Governor General’s Academic Medals are awarded at four levels: Bronze at the secondary school level, Collegiate Bronze at the post-secondary and diploma level, Silver at the undergraduate level, and Gold at the graduate level. Career Fair 2011: A Resounding Success!
On September 26th, 2011 we hosted our annual JMSB Career Fair at the Hôtel Omni Mont-Royal. Close to 50 organizations participated, including Bombardier Aerospace, Procter & Gamble, BMO Financial Group and newcomer to the Quebec market, Target Canada. These employers took advantage of this great opportunity to showcase their companies and identify potential candidates amongst the 450 participating students and alumni from undergraduate and graduate levels.
“Given that it was our first time at JMSB, we were blown away by the level of talent, professionalism and knowledge that the students displayed and were able to walk away with a large number of hires. All in all we really enjoyed the career fair, information sessions and on campus interviews and look forward to a continued partnership with JMSB as we continue to grow.”

MBA Community Service Initiative (MBA CSI) helps develop future business leaders who are socially responsible global citizens
Some 50 stakeholders, including former student interns, host organizations, entrepreneurs, JMSB staff, and members from the not-for-profit community gathered at the Atwater Club to celebrate another year of success at their annual dinner event last June.
Dave McKenzie, Coordinator and Founder of the MBA CSI, announced the much anticipated launch of the MBA CSI Entrepreneur Network. The group includes new and more seasoned business owners who want to share their experience, knowledge and best practices with other participants. The network will serve as a great resource to past and current entrepreneurs who completed the “Starting Your Own Business” training program.
Since its launch in November 2008, MBA CSI continues to be a key learning component of the John Molson MBA program. Through its various activities, MBA CSI helps develop future business leaders who are socially responsible global citizens and creates a positive and meaningful impact in the community.

New training initiatives at CMS in 2011 in partnership with industry!
Retail Day
Retailers from various organizations share inside knowledge and network with JMSB students eager to learn about potential opportunities in the retail industry.
Last fall, Career Management Services (CMS) hosted its very first Retail Networking Event. The evening began with a panel presentation from industry professionals (see list below) who presented their organizations and talked about their own career paths, their day-to-day work, the challenges they face and their vision of the industry. They also discussed career opportunities available in the industry and provided advice on how to find a position in the different functional areas of retail, such as management, supply chain, marketing and HR to name just a few.
The presentation was followed by a networking reception where the panelists and other participating retailers mingled with a selected group of highly qualified students. These students were well prepared to impress as they were treated earlier in the day to a “Dress for Success Workshop” by Le Château’s experts who gave them tips on how to project a positive image and ensure that the first impression a potential employer gets is a positive one!

Industry experts help train students at the JMSB Mini-Boot Camps
Following the advice of our consulting and capital markets industry partners, we recognized the dual importance of full academic preparation for JMSB students as they embark on their careers and proper preparation for these industries’ intense and rigorous recruitment process.
Consulting Mini Boot Camps
Based on the first Consulting Mini Boot Camp held in March 2011, Career Management Services supplemented its inaugural training program with a second Consulting Mini Boot Camp in November. The timing was meant to train students seeking summer internship opportunities during the January recruitment season. Industry experts and JMSB alumni shared information on the benefits and challenges of working in consulting and provided advice on how to enter the field and what potential employers are looking for.
Capital Markets Mini Boot Camp
In all, 46 JMSB students participated in one of two training days that took place in June and November 2011 as part of a new training program to prepare students seeking summer or full-time opportunities in the Capital Markets industry. Throughout the day, students attended several workshops delivered by industry experts from different sectors of the industry, namely Investment Banking, Equity Research, Sales & Trading, and Corporate Banking. At lunchtime, they were treated to a keynote address from industry leaders on “The Capital Markets Landscape”. To end the event, industry professionals and JMSB alumni discussed the challenges and opportunities of the industry during a panel presentation. They provided advice to job seekers looking to enter their field, and addressed what they can do as potential candidates to prepare themselves for a successful career in the financial industry.
We would like to extend our special thanks to the following firms who supported this new learning initiative in 2011. With your help, students gained a better understanding of their career options and learned to better prepare for the highly competitive recruitment process in both the Consulting and Capital Markets industries:
