nagement positions in 2010 than they have ever been. Yet\, the advancement
of women into top management positions remains slow. Applying the shifti
ng standards model (Biernat\, 2003) and role congruity theory (Eagly & Kar
au\, 2002) to evaluations of men and women managers\, we test a model in w
hich we link communal personality to managers’ ability to form and maint
ain relationships at work\, which we predicted would be differentially ass
ociated with bossess’ ratings of potential career derailment for men and
women managers. Using two large samples of managers(~15\,000 and ~30\,000
)\, we find that when women are good at relationships\, they are seen as l
ess likely than men with the same level of relationships success to derail
. In contrast\, when they violate gender-based stereotypes by having relat
ionship problems at work\, they are perceived by their bosses to be more l
ikely than men with the same level of relationship problems to be candidat
es for derailment. This research demonstrates one of the ways that gender
stereotypes can intentionally or unintentionally lead to biased evaluatio
ns of women managers. Because the effects we found are small\, we discuss
  their practical significance as well. <br /><br />\n<h2>Joyce E. Bono</h2

ers across a variety of \norganizations\, we develop a framework describin
g how and why criers are \nperceived at work. Our findings confirm earlier
work by showing that \nobservers use behavioral scripts to evaluate appro
priate behavior in \ncommon work contexts. Additionally\, our findings sho
w that\, in stressful\n work contexts\, observers also use four common beh
avioral scripts to \nevaluate both prohibited and required behaviors. Furt
her\, our findings \nsuggest that crying is commonly defined as a prohibit
ed behavior in \nscripts for stressful work contexts\, and engaging in suc
h prohibited \nbehavior prompts observers to make attributions of criers.
Finally\, our \nfindings reveal that employees who violate behavioral scri
pts by crying \nare routinely perceived as unprofessional and weak\, and o
ccasionally \nperceived as manipulative. We discuss these findings in term
s of their \nimplications for theories of person perception and behavioral
  scripts in\n organizations.<br /><br />\n<h2><strong>Kimberly D. Elsbach<

studies\, we explored when and why external \naudiences (i.e.\, fans) ide
ntified with and supported the relatively \nlow-prestige organization call
ed NASCAR (the National Association for \nStock Car Auto Racing). In a fir
st study\, involving archival data and \ninterviews with NASCAR experts an
d fans\, we determined that fan \nidentification with NASCAR was due\, pri
marily\, to value congruence with \nNASCAR\, rather than the perceived ext
ernal prestige of NASCAR. We also \nfound that identification with NASCAR
led fans to support the \norganization\, as well as perceive that they cou
ld engage in \nselfexpression (i.e.\, “be themselves”). A second study
\, involving three\,\n large scale surveys of a group of avid NASCAR fans
over time\, confirmed\n that NASCAR was perceived as relatively low in pre
stige\, and that value\n congruence was a stronger predictor than perceive
 d external prestige of\n fan’s identification\, supportive behaviors\, a
nd self-expression. \nFurther\, this data showed that fan identification s
ignificantly mediated\n the effects of value congruence on supportive beha
viors and \nself-expression. In a final study of NASCAR fans solicited at
5 live \nNASCAR races\, interview and survey data revealed that value of
\n“patriotism” was: (1) the primary NASCAR value with which fans \nide
ntified\, (2) perceived as important but difficult to affirm through \naff
iliation with other groups or organizations\, and (3) affirmed through\n b
oth explicit procedures by NASCAR and behavioral displays by fans. \nToget
her\, these findings suggest that value congruence may predict \norganizat
ional identification and support to a greater degree than \nperceived exte
rnal prestige when organizations are relatively low in \nprestige\, and wh
en identification allows (and involves) individual \naffirmation of import
ant values that are difficult to affirm elsewhere. \nWe discuss these find
ings in terms of implications for theories of \norganizational identificat
 ion.<br /><br />\n<h2>Kimberly D. Elsbach</h2>\n<img style='float: left\;

r M&As by Developing Country Multinational Companies</h3>\nWe analyze the
performance of cross-border mergers and acquisitions (M&A) by developing c
ountry multinational companies<br />(DMNCs) in comparison to those of adva
nced economy multinational companies (AMNCs). We introduce the technologic
al escape hypothesis\, in which we propose that DMNCs address the weak inn
ovation systems of their home countries by escaping to advanced economies
and acquiring high intellectual property (HIP) target firms. Specifically\
, we argue that DMNC acquirers perform relatively worse than AMNC acquirer
s when purchasing target firms in advanced economies because of their lowe
r ability to operate in the institutional environment there. However\, we
propose that DMNC acquirers perform relatively better when purchasing HIP
target firms in advanced economies because they obtain sophisticated techn
ologies that help them upgrade their home operations and solve their techn
ological comparative disadvantages. Additionally\, we argue that target fi
rms acquired by DMNCs in advanced economies perform relatively worse than
target firms acquired by AMNCs because the former receive less sophisticat
ed competitive capabilities from the acquiring firm. Moreover\, HIP target
firms in advanced economies acquired by DMNCs experience even lower relat
ive performance than those acquired by AMNCs because DMNC acquirers are mo
re likely to hollow them out of their advanced technologies than AMNCs. Th
